CMHC 38th Annual Awards of Excellence Celebration

Coastal Virginia's Largest Multifamily Housing Event

COMMUNITY AWARDS

Now open to CMHC member communities throughout the Coastal Virginia area. There are three awards given to each category.

Entry Fee: $95 per community. Entry Deadline: May 16, 2023; Judging Takes Place: June 12-23, 2023 (excluding weekends)

Entry Qualifications

Owner/manager companies and apartment communities that are members in good standing of the Coastal Multifamily Housing Council are eligible to compete in the Awards of Excellence Community Competition.

Entries are limited to apartment communities within the boundaries covered by CVBIA/CMHC: Chesapeake, Franklin, Gloucester, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Southampton County, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

Judging will take place June 12 through June 23, 2023; Monday through Friday only. Judges' visits cannot be rescheduled. All entries must include a mobile phone contact for a member of the property's management staff.

All entries must provide a current exteror photo. 

All entries must be occupied properties.

Winners will be announced at the 38th Annual Awards of Excellence Celebration Thursday, July 13. Event details and a registration form to come!

PLATINUM AWARDS

The CMHC Platinum Awards recognize excellence in specific aspects of an apartment community. Three awards will be given in each category and an additional entry fee is required for each category entered. Now open to CMHC member communities throughout the Coastal Virginia area! 

Entry Fee: $80 per category. Entry Deadline: May 16, 2023; Judging Takes Place: June 12-23, 2023 (excluding weekends)

The Platinum Awards recognize excellence in your model, maintenance shop, amenities package and curb appeal.

MERIT AWARDS 

To be eligible, Nominees must be CMHC members and must be nomited by a person in a position one level above theirs (except for the Lifetime Achievement category). They also must have held their current position for at least one year. (Nominees are not eligible if they received the Merit Award for which they are nominated in 2021 or 2022.) There is one award given to each category.

Entry Fee: $80 per category. Entry Deadline: May 16, 2023; Judging Takes Place: June 12-23, 2023 (excluding weekends)

Nominations will be accepted for the following awards:

Lifetime Achievement: Honors the multifamily executive who has made a recognizable difference in the multifamily housing industry and who has been involved in the industry for at least 25 years.

Multifamily Executive of the Year: Honors the multifamily executive who excels in property management and demonstrates outstanding service and dedication to his or her company and the multifamily housing industry.

Regional Property Manager or the Year: Honors the regional property manager who oversees a minimum of three communities and who demonstrates outstanding service and dedication to his or her company and the property management profession.

Property Manager of the Year: Honors the resident manager who has shown professional growth in the management field and earned the respect of residents and colleagues.

Leasing Consultant for the Year: Honors the leasing consultant who has shown professional growth in the apartemnt leasing field and earned the respect of residents and colleagues.

Maintenance Supervisor of the Year: Honors the maintenance supervisor who excels in his or her job, maintains a good working relationship with management and residents, and shows a desire to sharpen professional expertise.

Maintenance Employee of the Year: Honors the maintenance employee who excels in his or her job and is committed to management, the community and its residents.

Above and Beyond: Honors an employee who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to his or her company, giving more than 100 percent to the job or task at hand.

RESIDENTS' CHOICE AWARDS 

And you can let your residents have a say in the Residents' Choice Competition, where they can choose your community as best of the best. CVBIA will be sending a spearate entry form. There are two awards for this category.

JUDGING CRITERIA

What are the judges looking at when they visit?

Landscaping, grounds, parking lots: Curbs, driveways and steps clean and free of debris; well-kept entrance landscaping; all areas free of litter, old cars, tires, etc.; parking spots marked and painted; grounds area free of holes, mud and dirt; lawn neatly cut and trimmed; flowerbeds (if applicable) free of weeds

Common areas: Mailboxes free of fliers, tape and debris, with overall area well-kept; playgrounds (if applicable) clean and litter-free, with well-maintained equipment; garbage areas appropriately placed, screened by fencing or landscaping and in good condition; swimming pool (if applicable) clean and litter-free; storage areas clean and well maintained; picnic tables and grills (if applicable) clean and well-maintained, with no peeling paint.

Building exteriors: Trim and doors neatly painted; entrances neat and litter-free; patios and balconies (if applicable) neat and clean

Information center/clubhouse: Easily located upon entering the community and clearly identified with signage; interior areas appealing and well-maintained; fair housing signage clearly visible to visitors; exercise room/spa/clubhouse (if applicable) neat and clean. Judges will be asked to call ahead to determine if they can view these areas. If they are not able to do so, the communited will not be penalized in the scoring process.

Overall impression: Attractiveness of the community as a whole, from landscaping to common areas to clubhouse/information center.

*Please note that communities are not penalized in the scoring process if they do not have certain amenities (i.e. pool, fitness center, clubhouse, etc.)
